As a result of the current global COVID-19 pandemic, SOAS has made a decision to hold 2020 Pre-sessional programmes as online only courses. This means the University will not be providing any face-to-face teaching on Pre-sessional courses this year.

We have revised the entry requirements for the Pre-sessional courses 2020, as we will be unable to provide a 12-week online Pre-sessional programme. Changes have accordingly been made to the entry levels for the 8-week and 4-week Pre-sessional courses. You can find more details on our website. I have also attached the pdf file with all the updated English language requirements.

We are accepting IELTS academic, TOEFL IBT, PTE academic, Duolingo and LanguageCert English qualifications for direct entry and integrated programmes (Pre-sessional and degree courses). Admissions will be reviewing current PSE offers and revising them to show any change to the existing Pre-sessional requirement. These changes have been made to support as many students as possible being in a position to join their degree programmes for the academic year 2020/21.

If your students have already applied for the Pre-sessional courses 2020, IFCELS will be contacting them directly regarding the above changes and their existing application.

If your students have not yet applied for the Pre-sessional courses, they will be able to do this with their revised SOAS offer letter. We would be grateful if you ask your students to wait until the end of April before submitting their Pre-sessional application as we are currently in the process of updating the online application form.

Please note that the Pre-sessional courses will be designed and delivered by the same highly qualified and experienced teaching staff who have taught the courses face-to-face for many years. The duration of the courses remains the same in terms of the number of weeks, and there will be a schedule of classes/work to follow Monday to Friday; the courses will continue to be a full-time commitment, and will require students to spend 25 – 30 hours per week participating in the online activities and completing the homework and assignments set. They will have regular contact each week with their teacher, as well as opportunities to collaborate and work with classmates online. The courses will continue to have assessment built into their design, and successful completion of the Pre-sessional will depend on both attendance and meeting the exit level required by students' follow-on degree programme.
